The literal meaning of have one's head up one's ass
"I'm talking abut how your head is really far up your ass."
I know what this means. It's figurative. "have one's head up one's ass" means to be ignorant about surroundings. What I wonder about is, the literal meaning.
How did this expression get to have such meaning?
Does ass here refer to butt or is it just a slang for body?
And does "up your ass" refer to your back or into the asshole? Does it literally mean your head was stuck in your asshole?
If that is the case, why 'far' is used in the sentence above? Doesn't "deep" make more sense?

"far" is just for added emphasis. Telling someone they are very "deep"doesn't sound right.
