"How many pens are there on the table?" Dear all, Say, we have a question: "How many pens are there on the table?" Is it possible to say "are here on the table"? And - are there any other way to ask about the quantity? Thanks!

You would only say 'here' on the table if you were standing right next to the table. 'here' is where the speaker is. How many pens are on the table is a general question which says nothing about the location of the person asking. As for other ways to ask about the quantity? - none that I can think of - 'how many' is how you ask about countable nouns, 'how much' for uncountable nouns.

How many pens are here on the table? conveys the idea that there are other pens that aren't on the table. “There are 23 pens here on the table and 54 pens over there in the closet.”

Нельзя сказать here are... there is/there are это устойчивое выражение. Если хочешь спросить про кол-во, то сначала пишешь How many/how much... а потом глагол, в зависимости от того, что ты спрашиваешь. There is/there are употребляются тогда, когда ты просто констатируешь факт НАЛИЧИЯ чего-то где-то. Но ты можешь спросить/сказать о кол-ве съеденных пельменей или о том, сколько человек твой собеседник видит. Тогда вместо there is/ there are будет другой глагол. Как-то так.
