In the United States, people debate this question. It's controversial. The US educational system is complicated. Every state is different. When I was in elementary school in the 1950s, everyone learned cursive. It was basic. It was taught everywhere. In the 1990s and early 2000s it started to fade. Many places stopped teaching it. In 2010 the national government made a recommendation. It's known as the "Common Core." They said that cursive wasn't important. About 46 states stopped requiring it. However, traditionalists objected. There was a reaction. Something like 21 states have re-introduced it. In the United States it depends on where you live. Some elementary schools teach it, some don't. Our local schools do. I don't have strong feelings about it. In the 1950s we were all taught how to extract a square root using pencil and paper, too. They don't teach that any more. It doesn't bother me. Times change. We can calculate square roots on a calculator. Cursive is a pleasant cultural tradition. It used to be a fundamental basic skill. Nowadays, it isn't.

Is it true you have no opportunity to learn cursive at school these days? I'm in England and have a 15, and 13 year old. Neither were taught cursive and to be honest as someone who only writes cursive, everyone says it's lovely but then can't read it.

It will vary, of course, but cursive is not taught in many American schools.
