what does rumor mean in this sentence??

I think that a rumour only ever means one thing: it is a story that is passed around from person to person. It is similar to 'gossip', although gossip is uncountable.
Often rumours are not true, or are exaggerated. In this case, the writer is suggesting that it is true.
