"It was supposed to be"... meaning?
Hi everyone,
I would like to know about the phrase of "It was supposed to be" or any other form of this phrase as well. Please give me an example to understand it better. Thanks!

There are 2 different ways ":supposed to" is used.
A. (very common) supposed to= expectation, obligation, promise.
Bob said he would come at 8, but he came at 9.-->Bob was supposed to come at 8, but he came at 9 instead.
Employees are required to wear a uniform-->Employees are supposed to wear a uniform.
Society expects girls to act nicer than boys-->Girls are supposed to act nicer than boys.
I intended to dye this blue, but somehow the dying process made it green--> This is supposed to be blue; I don't know why it came out green.
B. (Much less common)a widely-accepted hypothesis
Life on other planets is commonly supposed to require water, but some scientists think it could exist in liquid methane instead.
The Romans are frequently supposed to have believed that the world is flat, but there is actually little evidence that they actually believed that.

It was supposed to be a good thing, a wonderful thing, it was supposed to be a relationship that would last till the end of our days, but I dumped you two years later because you turned out not to be a woman that you were supposed to be.
