The painter is recording memories from very long ago and they can be verified objectively as very accurate depictions. "Putting down" in this context means putting an image on a canvas in paint, but can also mean writing down.

In this situation, "putting them down" means to write them down. "He remembers early memories and puts them down in his journal." - he writes them down. Don't confuse this with "a put down", which is an insult or criticism. "I'm not going to stand here and get put down by you!" - I'm not going to allow you to insult me and make me feel worthless. Hope this helps.
