Please explain me the meaning of the sentence.

What does "was not a man to be argued with" mean?

To me it means this: It implies that because of his strong personality, he was a man who stuck to his ideas, and won't let anyway change them. That is, arguing with him won't do any good, even if someone had the chance, because he will not change, no matter what argument someone has, and would probably cut the person off before they finished their sentence anyway.
