lean in he leaned in the bedroom doorway. "lean in" means "lean on"?

No, it means he's bending a little at the waist with the top part of the body forward a little. When I read 'he leaned in the bedroom doorway', I imagine him at the entrance not quite wanting to enter, but wanting to see what's going on inside or to talk to someone inside.
