"lessen" can mean make smaller or less strong, but better words to use are "reduce" or "diminish".
"You may reduce/diminish the risk of heart diseases by keeping your weight down." (Both 'diminish' AND 'reduce' work here.)
"You may reduce your weight by not eating after 7 p.m". ('reduce' is needed here.)
