How Do You Explain Pictionary In Japanese?
Hey everyone! I’ve been living in Hokkaido as an ALT/AET for a few months and for each holiday, I’ve been trying to play some games with the 中学校 students. My Japanese isn’t good enough yet to give instructions or directions to others and sometimes the teachers have difficulty understanding how the game is executed.
So for the purpose of having the students learn English in this game, my version of pictionary is modified.
Rules:
1. Students are divided into groups/teams.
2. One student from every group will come up and be shown a Japanese word. (ex: トナカイ)
3. The students will go to their team and draw the word given and each team has to guess what the word is.
4. The twist is, the students have to tell me the word in English. (ex: reindeer)
Quickest team to tell me the answer in English gets the point.
Students are allowed dictionaries since most of them will know the word in Japanese, but again, this is to encourage them to learn English as well as have fun. Usually after playing a practice round, the students understand how the game is played, but I still want to know how to explain these rules in Japanese for teachers who aren’t completely fluent in English.
