A recess is a hollow space in a surface for example a recess in a wall. If you think of a recess in a wall, things placed in there can be forgotten about as they may be blocked from view. When we talk about recesses of the mind if you think of it in the same way, memories or thoughts can be forgotten in the back of the mind only to come up again later.
I hope this helps it's a slightly difficult concept to explain
