a dear British friend was quite happy with "Italian Grammar in use" from Hoepli, the following is from elementary to intermediate:

Hi Rudy, 
for all my languages I use Assimil, the "With Ease" editions (i.e. "Italian With Ease"). 
They help you acquire the language through the use of dialogues and contexts, while explaining the grammar in a gradual and stress-free way. It's pretty cool!

Hello Rudy,

As an italian native, i am not the right person to suggest you some italian student books but i have consulted my foreign friend who is studying in italy and he told me that the best books to  get some basic knowledges about italian is for sure these 3 books.
