* 멀다 (adj) = distant. * 멀어지다 (v) = become distant. -(아/어)지다 is a verb suffix for "become certain way/quality". * 멀어져가다 (v) = 멀어지어 가다 = 멀어지다 + -아/어 가다 become distant gradually / little by little. -아/어 가다 is a helper verb indicating something is happening gradually over time. e.g. - 부산은 서울에서 멀다 = Busan is far from Seoul. - 한 번 다투고 난 뒤에 친구와 멀어졌다 = I became distant with my friend after a quarrel. - 기차는 기적을 울리며 멀어져 갔다 = The train went farther and farther away blowing its whistle. * -아/어 오다 also describes something happening gradually. If it is coming toward the observer, or if the resultant state is to stay with the observer, we say -아/어 오다 (e.g. 모르는 사람이 내게 다가왔다. 날이 밝아왔다), and in the opposite case, -아/어 가다 (기차는 멀어져 갔다, 그는 쇠약해져 갔다).
