One day old Krag heard a crack! and a stinging something touched one horn and tore the hair from his shoulder.
I don't know what is the meaning of the "a stinging something". What is it ?

It is likely to be something that stings- perhaps a small animal or insect?

The original comes from "Reading Skill Builder, 2. p. 70. , but I find no way to find its source even by online.

The author is deliberately vague. One possibility is that he has been struck by a whip. A google search will find numerous phrases such as the "crack of the whip" and the "sting of the lash" (another name for a whip).

The speaker doesn't know what it is, either, at that moment. Presumably it's explained as you read further.
