What does it mean when a girl refers to herself as a "grrl" or as a "gyrl?"

"grrl" was originally used by lesbian/bisexual women to show they were not a typical "girl". The first part of the word, "grr" is an expression for growling or aggressive behavior. Usage of "grrl" has increased so now feminists, punk rock musicians, non-conformists, or general rebels who feel they differ enough from regular society norms also use it. The male equivalent would be "boi".

In my experience, "grrl" was originally used by feminists (actually feminist punk rockers). And is now often just used for "female" in an online context.

Hello Fisher,
Where did you read this ?;)
It depends ,it could mean nothing but another way to say "girl" , a way among feminists sometimes or just girls trying to be cute.
On the other hand these terms came to have sexual connotations * not necessarily* and in those cases:
"grrl" means lesbian
"gyrl" means a transgendered male "transvestite" .
