What is the different between kind type and sort

There is very little difference in meaning between these 3.
However If I were writing an academic essay, I would more likely use "type". If I were talking to a friend about their taste in films, or novels, I would probably use "kind"; and If I were asking about someone's taste in tea or coffee, or wine, I would probably use "sort". So, slightly different contexts: slightly different words...
