Take a breath is correct. (This phrase for me implies more of a medical interaction with a patient and a doctor. In my opinion this is a more literal sentence.)
You could also say: Take a breather. or Taking a breather. (This means more like take a break, or settle down.)

Take a breath. Means settle down. "Hit pause" is another phrase
