Hi Raissa! For a lot of the questions, it will help if you understand the rules of American football. But for this - "3rd and 6" means "3rd down and 6 yards." You'll also hear things like "1st and 10" "2nd and 2" "3rd and 15" (the pattern is an ordinal number followed by a cardinal number). I'm ****greatly**** oversimplifying here - in US football one team is on offense (they're trying to score a goal) one team is on defense (they're trying to stop a goal from being scored). When the team is on offense they have 4 tries to move the ball 10 yards closer to their goal. If they get 10 yards or more closer, then they get 4 more tries to move the ball another 10 yards. If they don't make it in 4 tries, then the other team becomes offense and they get 4 tries to move the ball 10 yards closer to their goal. Each attempt to move the ball is a "down." So the ordinal number is which down it is (is it their first attempt? is it their second attempt? In your example, it is their 3rd). The cardinal number is the number of yards they are away - in your example, in their first two tries, they moved the ball 4 yards. They still have to move it another 6 yards... or else it's the other team's turn at offense.
