MIENTRAS :
( una conjunción )
- (=durante) while
sonreía mientras hablaba = he smiled as he spoke
mientras él estaba fuera = while he was out
fue bonito mientras duró = it was nice while it lasted
mientras duró la guerra = while o when the war was on
- (expresando condición) as long as
seguiré mientras pueda caminar
I'll carry on (for) as long as I can still walk
no podemos comenzar mientras no venga
we can't start until he comes
- (=en tanto que) while, whereas
tú trabajas mientras que yo estoy en el paro
you're working while o whereas I'm unemployed
- (=cuanto)
mientras más lo repetía, menos lo creía
the more he repeated it the less I believed him
mientras más tienen más quieren
the more they have the more they want

mientras tanto
(=entre tanto) meanwhile, in the meantime :
llegaré en seguida, mientras (tanto), prepáralo todo
I'll be right there, meanwhile o in the meantime, you get it all ready
