I am down with Gemini, han yang, susan xuan's answers. I think English is tend to put""Despite that fact that he is smart"at the end of the sentence.in English, the "result" more likely is ahead. don't you feel you should say"he gets bad grades, despite the fact that he is smart "?or you r just playing "trap"? in Chinese,we don't say"他成绩很烂,虽然/尽管他很聪明",it sounds pretty weird.so we should shift the position of two phrases when translating it. Regards.

Despite the fact that means "尽管事实上..." so,this sentence can be translated into"他的成绩不好,尽管事实上他很聪明。"

尽管/虽然..., (但是/然而 --- sometimes omitted )... "Despite the fact that he is smart, he gets bad grades." 尽管他很聪明,但总是得分很低。( this implies he does not do his best in studying or does not diligently prepare for the tests.)
