A domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). 'com' generally describes the entity owning the domain name as a commercial organization. 'Italki' could have been labeled 'edu' ( www.italki.edu) as an educational site,but 'edu' domain registration is for the most part limited to schools located in the United States. Hi... The "dot" is just a seperator so the computer knows where the name of the website ends.The "com" stands for commercial and there are many more extensions for different types of websites. .net is for networks, .gov is government run websites, .org is for an orginization such as a charity, .edu is for an education facility. There are many more. These extension serve to give some structure and categorize the internet to a small degree
