"Communication" and "communicating" are similar in meaning, but used differently.
1. "Communication" would be used as a noun. For example, "Good communication is key to a successful marriage."
2. "Communication" is a gerund/verb and behaves like a verb. For example, "Communicating well is key to a successful marriage."
Note the difference: "Communication" is a noun and is modified by an adjective. "Communicating" is a verb and is modified by an adverb.
We do not use the term "communicating" as a true noun.

It can do depending on context, 交流 is often translated as 'to exchange' when its a verb in English or 'to swap', other words to express ' to communicate' are 联络 and 沟通 and 表达 and also maybe you can use 对话
