What is the origin and meaning of the phrase "sold the farm"?

Oddly, you can also say "bought the farm" - same meaning. It means that person has died. Eg. "Old man Henry bought the farm last week." =he died. It can be condensed to "he bought it" (but never "he sold it"). There seems to be no good explanation about the farm, but this link goes into some detail: www.answerbag.com/q_view/52221
