"one past midnight" is, as far as know, completely incorrect.
"one minute past midnight", is a precise statement of the time.
"it was past midnight", is a loose statement about time - it was after midnight, but we don't know exactly how long. Somewhere after 00.00, but before 01.00 (or even, perhaps, before daybreak).
