meaning of「気味」 Reading an article on Wikipedia, I came across the word 気味, from the phrase "ぽっちゃり気味の少女." I looked in up in an online dictionary, and from other examples I found, it seems to attach some meaning like "slightly," just a hint of something, maybe? For example, such as in, 買い物中毒気味下降気味沈滞気味の業界風邪気味反抗気味 So, I would just like clarification on the meaning, and then I would also like to know, how often is this construction used? Thanks very much! 宜しくお願いします！

"～気味" basically means "be ～ but just a little". 使用例私は昨日から風邪気味です。彼の会社の売上は下降気味です。あの子は少しぽっちゃり気味ですね。

It means : sensation; tendency; somewhat (a hint of is pretty close) 風邪気味 = lingering cold (the one that feels slight but won't go away) I think you can get the meaning from the individual Kanji. A taste of the "ki" of something. Super language is Japanese, don't you think?

たぶん1番よく聞く/使うのは、「風邪気味」とか「太り気味」「痩せ気味」かな?と思います。 :) あとは、傾き気味とか、偏り気味、押され気味、疲れ気味、サボり気味など色々あるけど、使える言葉と使えない言葉があって、どう違うのかは考えてみたけど、ちょっと分かりませんでした..ごめんね。でも、形容詞+気味は使えなくて、形容詞+めになります。 x 大きい気味 → o 大きめ (ちょっと大きい) x 小さい気味 → o 小さめ (ちょっと小さい) x 軽い気味 → o 軽め (ちょっと軽い) x 白い気味 → o 白め (ちょっと白い) x 硬い気味 → o 硬め (ちょっと硬い) あと、「～がち」という言葉もあって、これはあまり良いことには使われないけど、「～気味」と大体同じか、もしくはもう少し頻度/程度が高い時に使われます。例) 学校を休みがち = 学校を休むことが多い風邪をひきがち = 風邪をひくことが多い連絡が途絶えがち = 連絡が途絶えることが多いもし分からないところがあったら、聞いてね! :)
