Formation & Grammatical notes
N+중이다 In the middle of doing the noun
Vst +는 중이다 In the middle of verb(ing) / present progressive
하다 = 하는 중이다.
'ㄹ' gets dropped from Vst 여는 중이다.
V+는 중이니까 – In the middle of (verbing) SO ~~~~
V+는 중이지만 – In the middle of (verbing) BUT ~~~
V + (고 있다) Verbing + 중이다. To be in the middle of verbing.

Answer

For example
나는 공부하는 중이다.(I'm studying)
나는 문을 여는 중이다.(I.m opening the door)
나는 지금 공부하는 중이니까 방해하지마(I'm studying now so, don't interrupt me)
책을 읽는 중이지만 집중을 할 수 없다(I'm reading a book but I can't concentrate on)

I would say you should connect between 'in the middle of doing the noun / or action verb' and 
 'present continuous'. In present continuous function, you should think without future arrangement. 

another example
She's working very hard nowadays (요즈음, 그녀는 일을 열심히 하고 있는 중이다.)
The weather's getting hotter and hotter (날씨가 점점 더워지고 있는 중이다.)

-Past continuous-
I was sleeping when my friend called (내 친구가 전화 왔을 때, 나는 자고 있는 중 이었다.)
