savoir = to know something as a fact, "savoir faire" - to know how to do. "je le sais", I know it (is true). connaître = to be familiar with, to know a person. "je la connais", I know her.

I think Ian explained it well. Just wanted to add these examples (they helped me to differentiate between them): “pas que je sache” = not as far as I know “faire la connaissance de” = meet / get to know (someone)

savoir = connaissance (= learning) As verbs, 'savoir' and 'connaître' can be translated by the English verb "to know". However, there are distinct differences in meaning and usage for the two verbs.

I think the biggest difference is that, "savoir" belongs to the whole humanity, whereas "connaissance" belongs to an individual. For the sake of distinction, we can translate them as "knowledge" and "understanding", respectively.
