What associations in you are caused by New Year Holiday?
I think that for a lot of people in Russia and other ex-USSR countries these are the snow, the smell of tangerines and needles, champagne, a salade Olivier*, a sets of sweets for the children and the Christmas tree's decorations and lights, of course.
*a very popular type of salad from (since) the USSR times. Ingredients:
sausage, boiled potatoes and carrots, boiled eggs, peas, pickles and mayonnaise

It's very popular here in the US to watch the countdown to the New Year on television; the most popular one to watch is the Times Square party in New York City. We say we are "watching the ball drop" because there is a huge glowing ball that travels down a pole and then lights up the number of the new year. http://youtu.be/NHp-j8f2-lM
Then we find someone (or more than one someone!) and kiss them just after midnight to "ring in the new year!" That's when we always hear the song "Auld Lang Syne." It's such an emotional (but happy) song, and we hear it pretty much only at the New Year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acxnmaVTlZA
Then we drink champagne and toast the new year and keep partying! =) Happy (almost) new year!

Oh yeah! Mulled wine is fine, especially in the cold. You drink it hot?
