I don't think it is a mistake of 前八角后圆形种. We often say 有这种、那种，还有……种样子的blahblah.... And the writer here just wanted to say there is a kind of main body with the shape of circular in front and octagonal back. And "种" he added in the end might want to show that octabonal and circular shape all  came out in one kind of main body. But "种的" might be a little informal and unwritten, so he cut "的" at last.   Just my opinion~

3"前八角后圆形种"是没有这个说法的，应该是说，圆形的琴筒是由八角形琴筒改造而来。
