Can it express a present statement or because of 了 it's just past tense? I want to say in general terms that "I like to sing when I take a shower". Can I say it that way ? : 我洗澡了我喜欢唱歌。 (I know there are many other structures that would express this idea, but I just want to know if I can express present general concepts with 了) Thanks !!!

no 了 use in the present perfect or the past perfect tense and you can think it is a symbol of both the best is 我喜欢在洗澡的时候唱歌 it likes present tense

"了”in a sentence indicates that the event referred to has already taken place, and expresses the situation has changed or a new situation appeared.eg:She’s gone shopping.她去商店了。It is raining.下雨了。 In your sentence,If you want to say in general terms that "I like to sing when I take a shower". you can say it in this way:我洗澡时喜欢唱歌;OR 洗澡时我喜欢唱歌。

In your sentence, the "了" expresses action completion. You should use "时" for concurrency. 洗澡时我喜欢唱歌 or more idiomatically, 我喜欢洗澡时唱歌。

A sentence with 了 mostly means past tense or future tense. For example: 我洗澡了 means that I took a shower already. 我去洗澡了 means that I am going to take a shower, or I went to take a shower. It depends on the context. About present tense, mostly use sb. 在 V.
