If I want to write "southeast Asia" in a sentence should the first letter of southeast be in capital letter?

You capitalise words like North, South, Southeast etc when they are part of a name of a place but not when they direction.
It’s similar to how we capitalise Middle East, Central America and Eastern Europe for example. But you wouldn’t capitalise it if you were giving someone directions.
