Hi there!
Well, I think it may mean that one intends to be liked by someone to make the others treat him/her nicely. Therefore, “can’t get around good books” may mean the opposite.
For example:
I have never really bothered about being in teacher’s good books. ( it means that this student didn’t try to earn the teacher’s favor to be treated in a special and a nice way).
