Regret + ing and regret + to
Hello everyone,
I know that regret can be followed by either ing form and infinitive.
But why in this sentence ( from a CAE book) it is followed by to rather than ing ?
"They could not contact the team and spent the night on the mountains, regretting TO ignore the forecast "
Thanks in advance

I don't think this sentence is correct, so I am not surprised that you have this question.
I think it should be:
They could not contact the team and spent the night on the mountains, regretting that they had ignored the forecast.
Or it could be "regretting having ignored the forecast".
But "regretting to ignore the forecast" makes no sense to me.
What is a CAE book?

I agree with Tom - this sentence isn't correct. You could say what Tom said, or you could say, "regretting ignoring the forecast" but not what is written.
