Professional TeacherThe most beautiful or the beautifulest?
You probably know that “the most beautiful” is correct. But why?
Why do we sometimes use the suffix “-est”, and sometimes use the word “most” with superlative adjectives?
If the adjective has one syllable and/or ends in a -y then we use the suffix -est. Smelly, big, great, pretty etc. become smelliest, biggest, greatest, prettiest etc.
If the adjective has more that one syllable and doesn’t end in a -y, then we use most.
Most beautiful, most popular, most powerful, most expensive.
Of course, this is English, so there are exceptions to this rule. But if you can remember this tip, then you are at least 90% of the way there 👍🏻
