What does "exploded" mean here?
Hello,
Here is the text…
"On the other side of the creek, the underbrush exploded. Five Ares warriors came yelling and screaming out of the dark."
The setting is a dark forest, and the warriors have swords and spears.
Does it mean that…
1) The trees literally shattered and scattered
2) Warriors burst through the trees
3) Warriors cut their way through the trees by moving them aside or by slicing them with their swords
So, what happened to those poor trees?
Thank you in advance!

Nothing literally exploded. It's a metaphor. The author is referring to the moment when the warriors emerged as if were an explosion.
