砂糖を摂りすぎると、糖尿病になる。
「砂糖を食べる」という言い方は間違いではないのですが、砂糖はお料理やコーヒー、紅茶などに入れて摂ることがほとんどであり、砂糖を食べる人はあまりないと思います。
