I have had success with a few partners. The best partners: 1) Feel the same amount of commitment as you (whether it is a hobby or a desperate need) 2) Have the time to actually talk on a regular basis 3) Bring their own things that they want to work on (as should you) 4) They should be somewhat compatible with your personality. They don't have to be a perfect match, but the more points of connection you have, the better the conversations will go. Not everyone is a good match. This is fine. Let them move on to someone who fits them better, as should you.

My ideal language exchange is both parties being at least upper-intermediate in the other party's language and conversing about any topic. I appreciate both people being able to understand each other's language because it allows for easier and more concise correction of errors. They can switch to the other party's native language and better clarify. I'm not against language exchanging with someone who doesn't know your language but it makes for an awkward experience when you have no idea what they're saying and they can't clarify because they can't switch to your language.
