My jplt ,(level 5),workbook finally arrived from Japan today. I had a quick look though it. There is so much more I need to learn. I couldn't understand any of the audio CD that came with for my listening skills. I really need to get talking with native speakers. Ive started watching Netflix with Japanese speech and subtitles. I've also bought some Elementary level reading books to help with reading hiragana. Can anyone recommend any other books/audio books that will be of help to me.

Kindle and Audible are a good combination for improving listening and reading Japanese skills. Netflix is good too, however, you better watch only Japanese titles. In English titles, sometimes there are different Japanese translations between subtitles and dubbed which should be pretty confusing for Japanese language learners.

I don't know much about audiobooks. Rakugo shouldn't be good. Instead, I recommend following movie titles with English subtitles. Animation Movie Your Name BW movies Ozu: Late Spring, Tokyo Story Kurosawa: The Hidden Fortress, Rashomon Masumura: Black Test Car, The Black Report, Red Angel

I just wrote down the hiragana table over and over until I got it but there are some fun apps too. Use a software like Anki for vocabulary. It is very powerful if used consistently. There are also thousands of premade Japanese decks to download but I recommend building your own. As for books Genki I and Genki II. A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar. Podcasts JapanesePod 101 - Beginner and Newbie series. Such a great service, tons of content. Shows BONO BONO - It's a children's show, but it's thought provoking. Each episode is only 5 minutes. Simple grammar and vocabulary. I don't think there are Japanese subtitles unfortunately. https://www.crunchyroll.com/bono-bono This page tells you what grammar structures you need for the JLPT N5. https://jlptsensei.com/jlpt-n5-grammar-list/ Use this plugin to add audio to your flashcards https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/814349176 NHK News Web Easy - presents simplified versions of Japanese news articles. Even though it's "simplified" it's no walk in the park. You won't need to be at this level for the JLPT N5 but it's a great resource for further down the line. One of the best features is that at the click of a button it will read you the news story so you can read along as you listen. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/ I used these almost exclusively to prepare for the JLPT N5 and I passed it. But by working with tutors you're already setting yourself up for success. That's something I wish I had done sooner.

I recommend Japanese folk tales. If you are Japanese, I recommend a famous old tale that everyone has read as a child. "Princess Kaguya" "Momotaro" etc. You can watch it on youtube. I am learning by watching English while looking at English subtitles and Japanese subtitles. We also recommend Japanese news for foreigners. It explains the current social problems in an easy-to-understand manner. (NHK news). In Japan, it is the most trusted TV station and uses the most correct Japanese.
