When you are in * total darkness, it's better to light a candle than to CURSE the darkness.
Curse, not curve. When you are in total darkness (“the” isn’t necessary in that clause).
Next level edit: delete “when you are in total darkness” (redundant).
More natural and effective to say simply:
“It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness.”
