Today, I just wanna share with you a Chinese phrase “民族性格” which often seen in posts of Chinese media. What does it mean? let’s figure it out.
First, I am about to break it down into two parts, because it is made up by two nouns- 民族and 性格. 民族 means “nation”, 性格 means “personality”. So 民族性格 refers to some behavioural and mental characteristics of a particular group in a particular country, that makes them recognized as being unique. However, the meaning of 民族性格 has been extended these days and it is regarding all the people born and rise up in a particular country, though I think the term has been weakened much that it becomes not so accurate.
For some examples can show how the term is used, I recommend some content of social media. Some reels like “In Germany/Spain/etc. , we don’t……, we …..”. 民族性格 can be reflected on what they behave in a particular situation.
What do you think? And would you mind talking about that in your country a bit?
