I don't quite understand the meaning of the following sentence, esp. the expression "put back on". How many times have you pushed back on sth. your parents asked you to do? Does the expression "put back on" mean postpone or refuse?

Parents often like to give good advice and direction to their offspring, which is often unwanted. Teenagers/ young adults often prefer to follow their own instincts and 'do their own thing', rather than accept parental suggestions; so they PUSH back on their parents...

It means "to resist". The metaphor is that your parents are pushing you, and you push back (i.e. respond by pushing in the other direction).
