What is the meaning of "straggled up and down the page" and "shed"

To straggle is to move in an uncontrolled or messy way. So his writing was messy. To shed is to lose hair like a dog sheds it's winter hair. In this sentence they use it to show his writing slowly got worse as he stopped using capital letters and full stops.
