Hello, I’m James. I’ve bounced around Europe a little, having lived, studied and worked in France, Belgium and Poland. Before my current career, international public policy with a current focus on energy security, I worked in marketing and communications in the wine sector and ran training sessions. They might not seem so similar, but good food, drink and conversation is an essential part of diplomacy! Personal interests (besides language learning) include - but are not limited to - the geopolitics of Eurovision, horror movies and gothic ghost stories, international affairs and pop music. My near term goals are to hit B2 in Spanish and run my first 10k. What are yours?

Me as a Teacher

People are always at their best when they’re talking about something they truly care about - whether that’s their friends and family, favourite artist or stamp collection - and I love to help people articulate what excites them. I take a communicative approach and have a few favourite methods for getting the best out of students, but our classes will be driven by your interests. If you’re not sure about your preferences, let’s talk and put a couple of things to the test to see what methods work for you.

My lessons & teaching style

Do you want to improve your spoken fluency? Conversation classes are for you. Improve your accuracy and precision, especially in writing? Then grammar classes might be more your style. Whatever you choose, I’m focused on making sure you get the most out of our time. This means focusing on themes and topics that matter to you. As well as the specifics of the English language, I’ll coach you on learning how to learn and the powerful tools that can help: comprehensible input, spaced repetition, guided reading and dictation. I’ll make sure that when our hour is over, you know how to make the learning stick.
