AMAZING TEACHER! I learned so much in just a 30-minute lesson (I was late—we were supposed to have a 60-minute class. Sorry, Jhon! That was my fault). We covered pronunciation, culture, and vocabulary, and he even provided a beautiful presentation! I absolutely LOVED the cultural aspect—it made so much sense, like putting the final pieces of a puzzle in place. I also appreciated how he used pictures and slides, which were perfect for visual learners. Out of all the Quechua classes I’ve taken, Jhon stands out, and I highly recommend him!

Jhon is an amazing professor and I would recommend him to anyone! His teaching methods are sound and easy to follow, while also providing depth of knowledge and detailed explanations. Throughout the class he made sure to check in with me and ask if I understood or needed any clarity. He also engaged me with questions and prompted me to think more critically about the topics we covered. Our class was very rewarding and I am looking forward to the next!

In addition to the Quechua language, Jhon teaches a lot of valuable things about how to interact with Quechua speaking people. They have a lot of love, and you need to show respect, confidence and affection with them. People greet each other with an overjoyed tone of voice as if they haven't seen each other in a long time. This comes from having previously lived in isolated houses set far apart from each other. Lift your hat when you greet someone to show deference (good reason to wear a hat). People will be happy and understand you when you put emotion into your voice. When you meet someone, you should compliment them, based on something they do and are proud of: their hand woven clothes, their hard farm work, their strength. When you don't know how to say something complicated in Quechua, try to think of a poetic, metaphoric, or figurative way to say it.
