Big-city public school teacher with more than 20 years of experience! I am an elementary school teacher living in Brooklyn N.Y. I love reading, film, hiking, and spending time with family. I speak Spanish which I have studied as a second language for many years. As a teacher I am very encouraging, upbeat, and patient. I believe it's important to expose yourself new topics of conversation to build vocabulary. It's also important to consume Native Content that pertains to one's interest, whether it be videos, podcast, books, or articles. I like to spark conversations with questions that give students a chance to practice. At the same time, I am very careful to not talk to much and dominate the conversation. I don't believe in making corrections that inhibit the flow of conversation, but do take notes and share feedback at the end of each lesson. Of course I provide students at the beginning of each lesson to talk about their day, weekend, or week, but I will have prepare more structured activities to expose students to vocabulary and create topic conversations. This may be open ended questions about cultural idea, pop culture, or current events. Short videos and level appropriate written stories can be used depending on the interests of the students. I will take notes that I will share with students at the end of each lesson. If my student wants more I may even give homework that we can go over the next class.
