Certified German instructor with over six years experience both domestically and abroad Hello! I'm Spencer E. Tessman, a language educator, literary and historical researcher, and lifelong student of languages. I am licensed to teach German, Spanish, English, and History in the state of Nebraska, and I bring both academic expertise and real-world teaching experience to every lesson. My teaching philosophy centers on meaningful communication through authentic content. Rather than only memorizing vocabulary and grammar in isolation, students learn to understand and express themselves through topics that genuinely interest them. By providing comprehensible input and encouraging active use of the language, I help learners steadily expand what they can understand, discuss, and create. Even with beginning students, I conduct more than 90% of instruction in the target language while maintaining a supportive, low-pressure environment where mistakes are viewed as a natural part of learning. Outside of iTalki, I am a literary and historical researcher whose work focuses primarily on German-speaking Jewish authors and thinkers in exile between 1933 and 1945. However, above all, I am passionate about helping students discover the cultures, histories, literature, and people that become accessible through language study.
