Hello! My name is Mark, a native English speaker from Mpumalanga, South Africa, and I would love to teach you English and/or Afrikaans on Italki. I have a degree in Journalism from the University of Pretoria, am well travelled and have a passion for languages (I speak 6 of them!) My interests include travel, hiking, anthropology, philosophy, comedy and movies. I received my TESOL certificate in 2013 and have gained teaching experience in China as well as online. I love to share about my culture and learn about other people's way of life. I am a total language nerd! I love discussing technical aspects of language as well as comparing languages. I am quite perfectionistic, and will thoroughly enjoy watching you improve as we go along. I am very interested in learning about other cultures, so be ready for lots of questions!My lessons & teaching style
I have learned more than five languages from scratch. Through lots of trial and error, I have learned that the best way to learn a language is through conversation, conversation and more conversation. I will ask lots of questions and encourage you to talk about yourself, correcting your mistakes in the moment or taking note of them so that we can discuss them at the end of the lesson. When I am speaking, I will ask you to listen carefully and ask me if I use a word or phrase you don't understand. I will encourage you to study/memorize new words and phrases between lessons. Then, I will be ready to be blown away by your use of new vocabulary in our next lesson!Certificates
