Born and raised in Tokyo.
After obtaining teaching licenses for elementary, junior high, and high school at the Faculty of Education, a National University, I pursued further studies at the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University.
I later earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the School of the Arts at Columbia University in the United States.
Upon returning to Japan, I worked for several years in film distribution companies (watched over 500 films / year).
Inspired by my experience raising children as a foster parent,
I made a career shift and joined a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the independence of children in alternativ.
Me as a Teacher
Having lived in New York, USA for eight years, I am comfortable communicating in most types of English. In addition, my deep knowledge of anime, manga, and film allows me to understand and engage with youth slang and pop culture references.
I am also confident discussing topics that many Japanese teachers tend to avoid, such as politics and economics.
I can help students prepare for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), and I offer flexible study approaches—not only using textbooks like Minna no Nihongo and Genki, but also incorporating learning apps and digital tools to suit individual learning styles.
My lessons & teaching style
In my current online private lessons,
Beginner-level students: work on grammar using Genki and various learning apps, as well as simple kanji quizzes.
Intermediate-level students : follow lessons using their preferred textbooks or focus on preparation for the JLPT.
Advanced-level students : engage in free conversation practice, often using current news articles and online media.
For each lesson, I assign light homework.
Since I aim to maximize speaking opportunities during lessons—often using illustrations and visual aids—I encourage students to focus on reading and writing practice through homework assignments.

Talking with Mook-san for the first time was such a great experience. Even though it was just thirty minutes, she already gave me a clear and thoughtful plan. I’m sure anyone would be impressed by her professionalism and personality, and amazed by how knowledgeable, engaging, open, and dedicated she is. It truly inspired me to continue learning with her in the long run. I feel so lucky to have found mook-san, she's such an amazing teacher. ☺️🙌

Mook-san is an amazing teacher, inspiring and kind. It was my first time using italki and Mook-san was supportive and very patient. She works hard to customise every lesson for me, greatly appreciated. I had not studied Japanese for a decade, but she has helped me stay motivated. Thank you Mook-san! Highly recommended!
