ཚང་མ་ལ་བཀྲ་བཤིས་བདེ་ལེགས། Good wishes and greetings to you all!
I grew up as a nomad in Amdo (Eastern Tibet) and I have since spent more than twenty five years in monastic education with my journey taking me to Lhasa and finally to India in 2012. Fluent in both Amdo and Utsang dialects, I specialise in helping students speak Tibetan confidently—not just read it.
I have studied the entire Gelug curriculum from the basics in Buddhist epistemology and logic all the way to advanced Tantra and so can bridge traditional wisdom with practical language teaching. Whether you seek conversational fluency, literary depth, or Buddhist philosophy, I'd love to support you on your journey.
Me as a Teacher
I have two years of teaching experience both online and offline. I currently teach group classes in person (for beginner learners in Dharamshala) and have two long term advanced students.
I love teaching colloquial language (Utsang dialect) and would be happy to also specialise in Amdo dialect (should you wish to learn it). I am a compassionate and patient teacher, willing to adapt lessons to your needs- be that philosophy, literature, translation, grammar or just a desire to hold a conversation!
My lessons & teaching style
I have developed some unique ways of teaching Colloquial Tibetan that help foreigners avoid the classic trap of being able to read very well but never speaking fully fluently.
Depending on your level and preferred ways of learning I have a flexible teaching style. Currently with my long-term students we are reading novels together. I support them by explaining any words they may not understand and translating any metaphors, proverbs and other literary devices. For beginners I focus mainly on colloquial language, learning to read the alphabet and form basic sentences (using a variety of constructions- some of which are unique to Tibetan!)

Yarphel is awesome, and even though I am still a beginner in tibetan, I agree with ila malhotra gregory, I can tell he will be even better once we can start digging into the literature. He is very well traveled and interested in languages. It is very easy to ask him really specific questions about subtle differences between english and Tibetan. He's also just a fun guy. He gets me motivated to dig back into my textbook to learn something new.
I can't wait for every lesson.

Yarphel la is a very compassionate and knowledgable teacher. He makes learning a really enjoyable and co-creative experience. We are currently reading literature that without him I could not understand but he makes sure to go at a pace that works for us both! If you are at an intermediate or advanced level with your Tibetan I especially recommend him! ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེ་རྒན་ལགས།
