Hai, apa khabar semua? 😊
🙋🏻♂️I am Ammar from Malaysia. My hometown is in Kuantan, Pahang and now I am based in Selangor. My previous profession was as a chemist at a paint-manufacturing company in Malaysia.
🌿 I started teaching Malay in 2016 by doing it part-time, but now I am a full-time teacher for already 4+ years. Learning languages has always been my passion since I was small, and now, I find that teaching them is also interesting and fulfilling - I get to meet people from different from different backgrounds and nationalities and learn a lot about their cultures.
Me as a Teacher
I have no background in linguistics, but I can say confidently that I have deep understanding of how Malay works.
🍃 My goal at the start of a student's learning journey is to make sure that he/she knows exactly which direction he/she is going based on his/her learning goal(s). My materials are self-made (because you cannot find many books that teach spoken Malay) and they have undergone improvement over the years. The content is based on my observation on how the language is used in daily lives, not what is "correct" or "grammatical". This is because most of my students learn Malay for communication.
However, if you are learning Malay for exams, I can still help you with that!
My lessons & teaching style
During the first lesson, I will introduce the background of the language to the student to help him/her decide which direction we are going. This step is crucial because I have had students who learn Malay from a textbook but were not able to use it in daily conversations.
In the next lessons, we will focus on building vocabulary and constructing sentences. At the beginning of the class, we will do review activities that involve speaking and vocabulary practice. This is to make sure that the student is ready for new material. When a student reaches a certain level, we will use half of the lesson time for speaking practice and the other half for learning new vocabulary and sentences.

Always a good lesson with Ammar. His slides are great and easy to follow/review later. Having started as a beginner with him, I feel that my level of speaking has progressed quite a bit. I look forward to further lessons with Ammar and hope to eventually be able to speak in Malay 100% of the lesson time.

Another great lesson. Since beginning classes with Ammar, I've seen great improvement in my Malay ability and am much more comfortable in conversations. Whether you're an absolute beginner or just need some structure and accountability to keep improving, I highly recommend Ammar. His patience and relaxed teaching style make for a safe, comfortable language-learning environment.

Ammar is my first and only Malay teacher since I started learning languages on Italki. I have continued to learn from him because of his in-depth knowledge in the Malay language, as well as his professional and friendly disposition. I have progressed from knowing essentially nothing in Malay to being able to speak confidently at an intermediate (B1) level. Therefore I now have the ability to independently converse in Malay without much issue, for example, at the post office or when buying food.
There are hardly any materials out there for people who want to learn colloquial Malay, but Ammar creates his own materials, and I have benefited immensely from them. I am also currently learning formal Malay, and I have been translating English passages to formal Malay with the help of Ammar. Ammar is also extremely flexible about what I plan to do for a particular lesson.
Terima kasih Ammar! (Thank you Ammar!)
